What should you do after a fire?

In the event that your home or business suffers fire damage or smoke damage, contact your insurance agent/company as soon as possible to report the incident. Ask the insurance company what to do about the immediate needs of the dwelling, such as boarding up doors/windows, and pumping out water. It is typically the policyholder’s responsibility to secure their property and prevent any further damage.

There are a number of important things to consider during and after your conversation with your agent/insurance company. After the Fire:

Do Not enter the damaged site without speaking with the fire and/or police department. Fires can rekindle from hidden, smoldering remains.

If you are allowed access back into your home or business, be mindful of structural damage caused by the fire. Roofs and floors may be damaged and subject to collapse.

Food, beverages, and medicine exposed to heat, smoke, soot, or water should not be consumed.

Begin to save all receipts for any money you spend immediately. These receipts are important in showing the insurance company what you have spent related to your fire loss. Receipts can also be used for verifying losses claimed on your taxes.

If it is safe to do so or if emergency personnel can assist you, try to locate the following:

  • Identification such as drivers licenses, passports, and social security cards
  • Cellular phones, laptops, and/or tablets
  • Insurance information
  • Medication information
  • Valuables such as jewelry, credit cards, cash, and bank documents

Notify the following parties:

  • Your insurance agent/company
  • Your mortgage company
  • Your family and friends
  • Your employer
  • Your child’s school
  • Your post office
  • Any delivery services/home services
  • Your fire and police departments
  • Your utility companies

Do not throw away any damaged goods until after an inventory is made.
